A history of Hawler
Some call the city Erbil while some call it Hawler. Whatever name you use, the city's essence remains one rich in history and vibrant diversity that gives way to coexistence between various ethnic, linguistic, and religious communities. Erbil’s demographic and cultural landscape is further enriched as the city continues to welcome more regional and international newcomers who have decided to call Erbil their new home.
We know that any newcomer will feel like a local in no time, thanks to the warm embrace of the Kurdish values of hospitality and generosity. Visitors, expats, and newcomers will often be surprised by unexpected and meaningful gestures of kindness that convey how Kurds treat their guests. The spirit of hospitality runs deep in Kurdish culture, and we integrate it into each interaction with our clients.
Erbil is a city with deep roots in history, as the Citadel or the Minaret will show you. It is estimated that human settlement in Erbil dates to the 5th millennium BC. The city is well-recorded in history as Erbil has seen the rise and fall of many empires, from the Assyrians, Gutians, Medians, and Achaemenid, to the Roman and Macedonian empires. The earliest historical mention, written by King Shulgi of a Sumerian dynasty, refers to the city as 'Urbilum'.
Erbil in the Modern Age
Erbil's complex history has prepared it to flourish right into modernity. Since the dawn of the 21st century, the Kurdistan Region as a whole has been renowned for its safety and security, giving it a distinct reputation in the region.
Erbil specifically has embraced technological and economic advances, making the city a beacon of development in Kurdistan. The numbers show the regional prosperity. Since 2007, the region has experienced booms in foreign direct investment, with 2,830 foreign companies being registered in Kurdistan by 2014, most of them in Erbil. Foreign Direct Investment from 2006 to 2016 was valued at 6039 million USD, speaking to the region's stability and security. What's more, the city doubled in size within a decade, from 2004 to 2014, thanks to consistent investment. Since its recognition as a federal region in 2005, Kurdistan has aimed to develop its business and investment environment while diversifying the economy. As a result, the number of private sector companies, both local and foreign, has increased from 4,866 in 2006 to 24,209 in 2016. Further developments in the region are taking place by the grace of a rising entrepreneurial spirit and local drive.
The Kurdistan Region, especially Erbil, is home to a slew of hotels, residential communities, hospitals, universities, and schools, ensuring wide access to any required services and an elevated lifestyle. At the heart of the region's development is its stability and openness to investment, private enterprises, and international trade. Measures like tax incentives and interest rate subsidies have made Kurdistan, especially Erbil, a site of prosperity and openness. All this signifies that very briefly, the region became a success story with Erbil at the center.
